addon domain to a subdomain

I have a hosting plan where site abc.com is the main site and xyz.com is a subdomain.  I use cPanel on an Apache server and I want to know if I can set up test.xyz.com to test a site for a client.  So far, whether I try to setup an addon or a subdomain, it keeps ending up as test.abc.com.  Help!  My web host's knowledgebase is down, so I'm hoping someone here can help.  Thanks.

Hello Kelly, if you are still having this problem, in the newer versions of WHM when you go to create a sub-domain, there is a dropdown list on the right where you can choose what the sub-domain will be preceding, hope this helps,
