I'm a graphic designer but I do have some WYSIWYG web design experience, thanks to Adobe GoLive and Dreamweaver.  A friend has asked me to design a site, but I'm just at a loss as to where to start with his requirements.  Can anyone help?

What I need is for him to be able to send an email to his clients whenever there is a new user manual for his product available.  Clients should then be able to log in to a special "clients only" section of his site (which I assume I would use the Password protection script for) to access the downloads (pdf files, so I'm not sure if I need the smart file script or not).  The thing that throws me right now is that he wants to host on his company's server, not the one I currently use.  So, I guess I'm just not sure if this will work because I have to download the password protect file to my computer.  Can I then just use FTP to get it onto his server?

Sorry if this is really simple stuff, but like I said, I'm really new to this!  Thanks in advance!

Oh, and then how will the friend and his company set up usernames and passwords for their clients?  Will they need to be able to write the code, or is there an online form I can add to have them do that?

Kelly not sure if you solved your problem.... but build the site for functions and stability and as for the email try a third party company like Constant Contact.  They give you flexibility and great reporting.

How did the website end up looking?  Were you able to get everything figured out??  Hopefully it turned out well for you!
